Top 10 Dos and Don’ts for Your Next Cruise

We just returned from sailing with Royal Caribbean to Mexico. The trip was filled with exciting excursions, delicious food, and endless entertainment.

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, knowing the dos and don’t’s can make all the difference.

✅ DO: Plan Ahead

A little preparation goes a long way!
✔️ Check-in Online – Complete your online check-in and safety briefing before embarkation to save time at the port.
✔️ Download the Royal Caribbean App – Manage reservations, check daily schedules, and access deck maps.
✔️ Book Excursions Early – We didn’t book any, but if you plan to… the popular excursions fill up fast.
✔️ Reserve Dining & Shows – If you’re planning to dine at a specialty restaurant or see a Broadway-style show, book ASAP! (We didn’t do this, but if Jeff and I sailed alone we probably would have!)

🚫 DON’T: Overpack

Space in your room is limited, so pack smart!
No Irons or Steamers – Fire hazards are strictly prohibited. Use the ship’s laundry service if needed.
Avoid Overpacking – Stick to essentials: swimwear, casual wear, dinner outfits, and comfy shoes for excursions.
Leave the Towels at Home – The ship provides towels for the pool and excursions.

✅ DO: Know What’s Included (and What’s Not)

✔️ Complimentary Dining – Main dining rooms, buffets, and some casual spots are free.
✔️ Shows & Entertainment – Broadway performances, ice skating, and Aqua Theater shows are included.
✔️ Pools & Fitness Center – Free to use, along with many onboard activities.

💰 What’s NOT Included:
❌ Alcoholic drinks and soda (unless you buy a drink package).
❌ Specialty dining and premium coffee.
❌ Shore excursions, spa treatments, and WiFi (unless you purchase a package).

🚫 DON’T: Skip Muster Drill

Skipping the Safety Drill is a No-Go – It’s mandatory and takes just a few minutes to complete.

✅ DO: Take Advantage of Onboard Deals

✔️ Book Spa & Specialty Dining on Embarkation Day – Discounts are often available on day one.
✔️ Look for Drink Specials – Some bars offer happy hours with lower prices.
✔️ Shop During Onboard Sales – Midweek and final-day sales can save you money on souvenirs and duty-free items.

🚫 DON’T: Blow Your Budget on the First Day

Don’t Go Overboard with Drink Packages – Make sure you’ll drink enough to make it worth it.
Avoid Unnecessary WiFi Costs – Disconnect and enjoy the cruise unless you really need internet access.

✅ DO: Be Courteous to Crew & Fellow Guests

✔️ Tip Generously – The crew works hard, so tip extra for great service beyond automatic gratuities.

🚫 DON’T: Ignore Dress Codes

Formal Nights are Worth Dressing Up For – Even if you don’t go all out, wear something nice.
No Swimwear in Restaurants – Cover up when grabbing a bite!

✅ DO: Explore & Have Fun!

✔️ Try Something New – Rock climbing, FlowRider surfing, ice skating, or zip-lining—why not?
✔️ Attend Trivia & Game Shows – Fun and often free activities to enjoy with friends or family.
✔️ Visit Lesser-Known Spots – Find quiet lounges, hidden bars, or the Solarium for a peaceful retreat.

Final Thoughts

A cruise is an amazing way to relax, explore, and have fun. By planning ahead, being mindful of spending, and following ship etiquette, you’ll ensure a smooth sailing experience from start to finish!
