Every spring we take a long road trip to Arkansas. Usually, I’m solo with 5 kids in a minivan traveling 20 hours round trip. Needless to say, I have to get really creative to keep everyone happy and make the journey just as fun as the destination.
Here are some tried-and-true road trip hacks to survive the road with kids.
1. Prepare for Entertainment Overload
• Create an Entertainment Kit: Include books, coloring books, stickers, small toys, and travel games.
• Audiobooks and Podcasts: Great for engaging the whole family. Some kid-friendly options include The Story Pirates and Wow in the World.
• DIY Activity Binder: Fill it with puzzles, mazes, dot-to-dots, and age-appropriate worksheets.
Pro Tip: Rotate toys and activities every hour to keep things fresh.
2. Snack Smarter
• Use a Tackle Box or Pill Organizer: Create a mini snack station with a variety of treats like crackers, fruits, nuts, and candy.
• Pack a Cooler: Keep fresh fruits, yogurt tubes, and string cheese chilled and ready.
• Avoid Messy Foods: Save the applesauce pouches and sticky snacks for pit stops.
Bonus Hack: Give each kid a snack budget. Let them choose their own treats at rest stops within the set limit—it makes them feel in control.
3. Create a Backseat Command Center
• Shower Caddies: Perfect for holding water bottles, snacks, and toys.
• Over-the-Seat Organizers: Store tablets, books, and art supplies.
• Travel Tray Tables: Give kids a surface for coloring, eating, or playing.
Don’t Forget: Bring reusable grocery bags for easy clean-up on the go.
4. Plan Strategic Stops
• Playground Pit Stops: Use apps like Playground Buddy to find nearby parks.
• Fast Food with Play Areas: Great for letting kids run around while you recharge. We LOVE Chic-Fil-A for this.
• Scenic Stops: Turn rest breaks into mini-adventures—explore local landmarks or take a short nature walk.
Pro Tip: Plan your stops ahead of time to avoid last-minute scrambling.
5. Use Surprise Bags for Instant Joy
• Hand them out at different milestones—every hour.
• Use them as rewards for good behavior.
• Include road-trip-themed items like travel bingo or car-themed stickers.
6. Bring Comfort from Home
• Blankets and Pillows: Great for naps and comfort.
• Favorite Stuffed Animals: Instant soothers for younger kids.
• Headphones: Essential for listening to their own music or shows without bothering others.
Bonus Hack: Dress kids in comfy clothes or pajamas for long drives.
7. Have a Road Trip Survival Kit
• First-Aid Kit: Band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers.
• Car Essentials: Flashlight, jumper cables, and a portable phone charger.
• Kid-Specific Needs: Wipes (even for older kids), motion sickness medicine, and an extra change of clothes.
8. Play Road Trip Games without Screens
• I Spy
• License Plate Game
• 20 Questions
• Would You Rather
Pro Tip: Turn these games into competitions with small prizes for added motivation.
9. Manage Expectations and Go with the Flow
• Stay Flexible: Allow extra time for unexpected delays or spontaneous stops.
• Stay Positive: When things go off course, embrace the adventure.
• Get Kids Involved: Let them help navigate or choose a playlist for the drive.
10. Capture the Journey
• Road Trip Journals: Let kids draw pictures and write about their favorite moments.
• Polaroid or Disposable Cameras: Give kids their own camera to capture their perspective.
• Collect Souvenirs: Rocks, postcards, or pressed flowers make great mementos.
Final Thoughts
Road trips with kids are all about balance—mixing adventure with comfort, fun with downtime, and planning with spontaneity. Buckle up, enjoy the ride, and happy travels!
