August is *almost* here, and with it comes the constant whisper of back-to-school prep in every aisle of Target.
But if the idea of “getting ready for school” sends you into a panic, take a deep breath.
Here’s the truth: Back-to-school prep doesn’t have to be stressful. You don’t have to overhaul your entire home, create Pinterest-worthy bento boxes, or have your kids practicing getting up at 6 AM for weeks. Let’s keep it simple! Here’s how:
1️⃣ Start Small: One Thing a Day
Instead of trying to prep everything in one weekend, try tackling one small task a day:
Day 1: Check what school supplies you already have at home.
Day 2: Order a new backpack or lunchbox if needed.
Day 3: Go through your kid’s closet and pull out clothes that don’t fit.
Day 4: Pick up snacks for lunchboxes.
Day 5: Fill out any forms the school has sent you.
Day 6: Set up a “drop zone” for shoes, backpacks, and lunchboxes.
Day 7: Celebrate with iced coffee because you’re officially prepped.
Small daily wins are much more manageable (and way less stressful) than a marathon prep day.
2️⃣ Don’t Overthink Lunches
Your kid’s lunch does not need to look like a rainbow charcuterie board. Aim for:
Something with protein (cheese stick, turkey, yogurt) Something crunchy (crackers, pretzels) A fruit or veggie if possible Something fun (cookie, fruit snacks)
If you want to prep ahead, make a snack basket in the pantry and fridge so your kids can help pack themselves. That’s one less job for you.
3️⃣ Adjust Routines Gently
If your summer schedule is chaotic, start adjusting bedtime and wake-up times gradually, but don’t stress if it’s not perfect by day one. Everyone will adjust. You’re not failing if your kid’s first week back is a little rough.
4️⃣ Embrace the “Good Enough” Mindset
If the backpack is last year’s and still works? Use it. If you buy pre-sharpened pencils instead of sharpening 100 yourself? Good job. If you skip the fancy “first day of school chalkboard sign” this year? Totally fine.
Your kids will remember the hugs and excitement, not whether you had everything color-coded.
5️⃣ Keep It Fun
Back-to-school doesn’t have to feel heavy. Let your kids pick out a fun folder or a new water bottle. Plan a simple back-to-school breakfast (like donuts and chocolate milk) on the first day to make it special.
Remember: You’ve Done This Before, and You’ll Do It Again
Back-to-school prep isn’t a competition, and it certainly shouldn’t steal the last joy of summer from you. Keep it simple, stay flexible, and give yourself grace!
