It’s a Wonderful Life – Dinner and a Movie

A nostalgic Christmas movie night inspired by Bedford Falls.

🍿 The It’s a Wonderful Life Snack Board

While this film might not be my children’s favorite, it is one of mine. It’s a great background Christmas movie. I enjoy having it on while cooking in the kitchen or wrapping gifts. Last week, I worked on making the ultimate Snack Board. Think nostalgic Americana, like something Mary Bailey would put out when the neighbors drop by — familiar foods with simple ingredients.

🎄 It’s a Wonderful Life Snack Board

Centerpieces (the “main events”)

  • Angel Wings & Snowflake Sugar Cookies
  • 1940s “Cinema” Popcorn — buttered + lightly salted (serve in vintage paper cones or a big bowl)
  • Bedford Falls Cheesy Bread:

Ingredients

1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 pound gruyere cubed
1 tablespoon rosemary; fresh if you have it
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon honey
1 egg, beaten
Cinnamon + sugar, for sprinkling

Cube the cheese and pour honey, garlic, rosemary mixture on top. Fold the into pastry puff and close with egg wash. Bake 350° until golden brown and melted. Cut into small slices and serve immediately

Sweet Nostalgic Treats

  • Bell Sugar Cookies — “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings!”
  • Chocolate-Covered Cherries — inspired by Mary and George sharing ice cream at the soda shop
  • Old-Fashioned Fudge — classic Christmas dessert
  • Snowflake Pretzels Dipped in White Chocolate

Savory Classics (1940s family spread style)

  • Cheese + Crackers — use sharp cheddar, swiss & gouda for that traditional vibe
  • Salami & Prosciutto Rosettes (fancy but still vintage feeling)
  • Stuffed Olives — because every holiday spread needs a salty bite
  • Pickles or Gherkins — retro, but so right for the theme

Fresh Touches

  • Apple slices
  • Cranberries scattered around for decoration
  • Rosemary sprigs to look like mini Christmas trees 🌲

Drinks to Serve With It

  • Hot Cocoa with Whipped Cream & Marshmallows
  • Milkshakes or Ice Cream Soda Floats (a wink to the soda shop scene)
  • No Gin Tonight, Son- Gin & Tonics

Display Styling Ideas

  • Lay everything on a wooden board for that classic warm look
  • Add a bell in the center
  • Place a photo or still shot of the movie near it
  • Use white fairy lights or sprinkle powdered sugar like “movie snow”
  • Write a chalkboard sign: You are now in Bedford Falls
