5 ways to beat the winter blues

The next thing we truly have to look forward to is Spring!!! But if you live in the Midwest, that season can feel like a century away…i.e. getting slammed with a ton of snow, like we did this weekend.

Here are 5 Ways Moms Can Embrace Mid-February Bliss (with Recipes!)

1. Celebrate the Everyday Moments of Love

Valentine’s Day might be over, but showing love to your family (and yourself) is always in style. Try to focus on small, everyday ways to connect—like sharing a special breakfast or surprising your kids with a fun snack.

Family Recipe Idea: Heart-Shaped Pancakes

Ingredients:

• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 2 tbsp sugar
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp baking soda
• 1 cup buttermilk (or heavy whipping cream)
• 1 egg
• 2 tbsp melted butter

Mix all ingredients, cook on a griddle, and use a cookie cutter to make heart shapes. Add berries, whipped cream, or chocolate chips for a special treat!

2. Declutter

While you’re refreshing your home, why not refresh your meal rotation, too? Decluttering your pantry and fridge is a great way to set the stage for easier meal prep and healthier family choices. I decluttered our pantry yesterday and while it’s very time consuming, waking up to a clean pantry is so worth it. I plan to tackle the fridge today!

One-Pan Chicken & Veggie Sheet Bake

Ingredients:

• 4 chicken thighs or breasts
• 2 cups chopped veggies (onions, carrots, broccoli, potatoes, etc.)
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp paprika
• Salt and pepper to taste

Toss everything on a baking sheet, roast at 400°F for 35–40 minutes, and you’ve got an easy dinner with minimal cleanup.

3. Get Outside and Soak Up the Sun

Fresh air works wonders for kids and moms alike. After some time outdoors, warm up with a hearty snack or meal that’s easy to whip up.

Kid-Friendly Snack: Hot Chocolate Bar

Set up a mini hot chocolate bar with toppings like marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and sprinkles. It’s a guaranteed hit after a winter walk!

4. Revisit Your Goals

Sticking to your goals can be easier with a few simple meal-prep recipes that help busy nights run smoothly. Think freezer-friendly or one-pot meals that save you time and stress.

Freezer-Friendly Recipe: Homemade Mac & Cheese Bites

Ingredients:

• 2 cups cooked macaroni
• 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
• 1 egg
• ¼ cup breadcrumbs

Mix ingredients, scoop into muffin tins, and bake at 375°F for 15–20 minutes. Freeze leftovers and reheat for a quick snack or side dish.

5. Indulge in Seasonal Comforts—Without the Guilt

Nothing says comfort like a warm, home-cooked meal enjoyed with your family. Let the kitchen be a place to create cozy memories during these final weeks of winter.

Comfort Dinner Recipe: Mississippi Roast Stew

Ingredients:

• 2 lb. beef chuck
• 6 cups beef broth
• 3 carrots, chopped
• bag of small Yukon potatoes
• 1 yellow onion, diced
• 1 stick of butter
• 1 package ranch, 1 package Italian seasoning, 1 package Au Jus gravy seasoning

Throw everything into a slow cooker, cook on low for 8 hours, and come home to a warm, comforting meal the whole family will love.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Mid-February can be a bit depressing, but finding moments of joy certainly helps. Whether it’s a family meal, a cozy evening indoors, or a goal reset, take the time to slow down and savor the season. Warmer days will be here before you know!
